Those who have not submitted papers can also register for participation in the symposium. Regardless of the submission, you are expected to join the discussion in the afternoon session. Upon registration to the CHI conference, you need to pay additional $90, while students of IPSJ could get reimbursement. Details will be announced later.

This symposium would like to invite position and research papers about latest research that cover various topics related to HCI.

This symposium aims to collect work originated from Japan or closely related to the Japanese culture and society, and promote its unique problems and approaches to a wider community. This symposium is also intended to promote social exchange among young researchers, more specifically recently-graduated Ph.D.scandidates, and even junior students (including undergraduates) who are strongly interested in HCI.

Unlike traditional academic conferences, this symposium puts emphasis on interactive discussion. Participants are expected to give short presentations and engage discussions on how HCI research from this region could shape the future. At this symposium, we hope that the participants can

  1. grow their social network in the research community,
  2. deepen their perspective on research, and
  3. accumulate experience of presentation at an international venue and gain feedback from researchers and fellow students.

Themes

We invite any type of HCI research, such as:

  • Novel interactive systems and interaction techniques
  • Novel hardware and software enabling new forms of interaction with computers
  • Studies for understanding human capabilities related to interaction with computers
  • Theories that explain human behaviors around computer systems
  • Systems and services that address issues prominent in Japan (e.g., population aging, and diversity in working environments)
  • Input and output systems to support creative activities and expressions

Upon the submission, you can optionally choose to submit it as CHI Symposium Challenge, which includes the deployment of your system at the symposium as well as presentations. One good example of symposium challenges is On-Air Forum. It has been deployed to the annual Japanese domestic workshop on HCI called WISS for over five years. When a CHI Symposium Challenge submission is accepted, the organizing committee will do their best to accommodate the system deployment at the venue.

Submission

A proposal should be submitted to an online form that will be available on http://hci.tokyo (this website) as one PDF file in ACM SIGCHI Extended Abstract format (2-8 pages) that includes:

  • Their original work,
  • A section of Future Impact, describing potential impact that this work and research direction could create in a long term (e.g., 10 years later), and
  • A short bio of author(s) attending the symposium.

Accompanying videos are highly encouraged.

All submissions are reviewed by the committee (and external reviewers as appropriate), but will not go through a formal review process Authors may expect to receive light feedback of up to a few paragraphs in length. One primary goal of this symposium is to broaden participation of young researchers in Japan, and preferences will be given to such participants though we welcome submissions from anyone.

All submissions are non-archival and will NOT be included in the ACM Digital Library, while they will be publicly available on this website. The organizing committee strongly recommends the authors to gain feedback from this symposium, continue their work, and submit papers to academic conferences.

Schedule

  • Submission deadline: 30 Janurary 2015 6 February 2015
  • Notification: 6 February 2015 13 February 2015
  • Camera-ready deadline: TBD
  • Symposium: 18 April 2015

Added on 16 December 2014: All authors with accepted submissions are expected to give poster presentations with demonstrations at the symposium. In addition, some submissions will be invited to oral presentations, which will be 15-minute talk followed by 5-minute Q&A (times are subject to change). Oral presentations will be chosen based on various criteria, such as the quality of work and diversity of topics. Demonstrations can be informal and ad-hoc; even playing demo videos with mobile/tablet devices would suffice. Due to the constraints by the venue, we are not able to accommodate demonstrations that require large space or external special equipment. Please prepare your demonstrations so that they will not produce large noise or anything that could potentially affect other symposia and workshops running in parallel. Our intention to have demonstrations is to encourage active discussions with other participants.

Added on 22 December 2014: More details on the schedule of the symposium can be found here.
